June 14th
As you recall we mentioned about the hot water heater exploding in Dad’s face. Well, we finally got the landlord to come and see if he could light the pilot light and, guess what? It exploded in his face too. Twice!! Poor guy. He got the same haircut as Dad. He came away pretty scared and said—I smell like a plucked chicken. He did too. We all laughed when he said that. For some reason it was REALLY funny in Spanish. His friend tried to light it too, but he had put a shirt over his hair so he would not get the same hair cut. They finally called an electrician and he is coming this week—we hope.
Dad gave a really nice talk in the Institute Graduation and I didn’t speak but accompanied the congregation and played back ground music while they received their certificates.
Our first summer English classes went well. The Seminary class had only a few, but will have more this week, but we had 35 sign up for English in the Institute age group. It is really a fun group. I’ve also started teaching piano lessons.
We enjoyed having 2 missionaries over for breakfast the other day since they are finishing their mission this next week. We have missed the close association with the missionaries here that we had in Pohnpei. There just isn’t the necessity to see them a lot like there was in Pohnpei. However, we did get to meet ALL the missionaries in 3 Zones on Saturday at a Super Zone Conference because Elder Grow from the first quorum of 70’s was here. He is in the Area Presidency for Mexico. It was so great because he reinforced with the missionaries (about 200) all the things Dad has been training the Bishops and High Council in. We had a short interview with Elder Grow and enjoyed getting to know him a little. He is a hard worker and travels a lot. The Brethren and their wives in the General Authorities certainly are earning their Celestial Reward. They work untiringly.
We’ve been using the AC a lot and we were really worried about what our bill would be, but it was only 100 pesos more than last time, which was a relief. It is still less here for 2 months than what we paid in Pohnpei for 1 month.
We found out an interesting tidbit about Mexico City. There are so many people that drive cars and the smog is so bad that they can only drive their cars on certain days. They are issued a certain color of license plate and the color determines what day of the week they are allowed to drive.
Congrats Cheree on doing so well on your zoning test. Sounds like you aced the test and are now a full fledge Zoner. We can hardly wait to get back have you come and message our legs and feet and use the oils to make us feel better.
Well, we almost got through the week with nothing really exciting happening, but Saturday night we found something to spice up our life again. We went with the Hales to dinner at SanBoarns and took a taxi to do so and, also, returned in one. At the Hale’s apartment we watched Heaven can wait and then walked home. When we got to the door of the apartment Dad reached in his pocket for his key to the apartment and ------no keys. We have no idea where they fell out of his pocket and there are only about 3500 taxis in town, all independently owned. The white taxis do have a lost and found place a friend told us, so she is calling to see, if possibly, we lost the keys in one of those taxis. I had a spare key, so we didn’t have to sleep on the front step, but all our keys to the church, our office, the executive Secretary’s office, etc are on the ring. The President that has the keys is out of town today, so we’re really in a bind-----but, this too shall pass. We are smiling and went ahead with our training with a bishop in another ward and it went well. It went so well that, afterwards, we met his family and they have invited us over to eat on the 28th
The Murdocks.
